Households dealing with allergies in Hampton Roads usually start by blaming pollen, and in April and May they are right. But people who feel worse indoors year-round, or who notice their symptoms are worst on waking, are usually dealing with something else entirely — and it is something the local climate is unusually good at supporting.

Upholstery belongs on that list more than most people realize. A sofa is a mattress that people sit on — the same fill, the same fabric, the same accumulation, and no equivalent of weekly laundering. In a living room where someone reacts noticeably, the seating is frequently a bigger contributor than the floor.
